A conversation in a bike shop.
I met Daniil while filming Jens Voigt in Bristol. He was working in sales at the Trek store there, and we got talking about bikes. Then he told me the rest.
He had spent years in London kitchens chasing a Michelin star. The hours took everything, and he burnt out. Cycling caught him on the way down, first at Herne Hill Velodrome, then everywhere. He got obsessed.
Everyone says they have no time.
Daniil makes it. At weekends, while his fiancée sleeps, he rides from Bristol to the coast or further to watch the sunrise, then rides home before she wakes. He gets his endurance miles in and still has the whole weekend with her.
That idea became the film. Early starts, snow on the passes, coffee at the top, and the light coming up over the Welsh hills.
The stills.
21 frames from the shoot.
